In this chapter Garion begins asking Mister Wolf why they are hiding from the Murgos. Aunt Pol quickly sends Garion to scrub the dishes again. After four days of traveling they reach Darine.
Silk tells a story of being a merchant with a load of turnips. Calls himself Ambar of Kotu to the gaurds. They exchange words and the group goes into town. They first stop at the inn and get rooms and stable. Aunt Pol had to inspect so she could see if it suited her.
Silk and Mister Wolf go around town to conduct business and search for the thing. Garion decides to go to the stables and speak with Durnik. They speak about thier confusions only to decide they will trust Aunt Pol's judgement. Mister Wolf ans silk return and disclose that "it" has not been here. It is then diceded to go to Muros after selling the turnips.
The nexy Day Garion goes with Silk to sell the turnips. He learns about the Drasnian hand language watching silk and the merchant. Silk is happy to report to Garion that he got three gold crowns for the load. They meander over to another merchant to find another load.
Upon arriving they also find a Murgo doing business. After telling another tale about losing his fortune as Ambar. The Murgo indtroduces himself as Asharak. They talk about Ambar and his spy days. Garion's mind is trying to warn him in several way, but he can't seem to tell Silk. Instead he remains silent, but recognizes him as the black figure in the distance. They leave with a cargo of hams to pick up out of the ordeal.
The next day they deliver the turnips to a warehouse. Starting of the way they came toward Muros. First West then South was the path before them. Garion found himself in Silk's company. Asking many questions he soon himself is learning this Drasnian hand language under Silk's instruction.
