Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 13

We start off with Garion and Barak arriving late. Being harassed by silk just serves to keep Barak on edge. The Cherek castle does not look like much. While parts of it look well maintained other parts are in shambles. We also meet Merel, Baraks wife. We soon find out that she has a great sense of duty, but no love for her husband.

The group quickly enters the main hall and begins exchanging formalities with all the other dignitaries. Queen Islena pretends to be a magician and give Pol a gemstone hidden up her sleeve. Pol on the other hand performs and act of magic and pulls a rose from the air for the queen. With that settled, they soon begin deliberating with each other over urgent matters.

They are quick to move the conversation to private quarters. None of them trust others after Brill and Asharak followed them for so long. The kings and queens separate into their respective groups and disperse. All the kings and any necessary servants moved into a private room and bolted the door. Garion notices a Cherek person in a dark green cloak down a corridor breifly.

Garion tries to linger and meander around, but is soon fount out by Polgara. She scolds him yet again and tells him it will be awhile so he should find something to do. Barak suggests going and seeing the armory. Garion slowly scoots his way down towards the armory. Getting a strange feeling, he ducks into the shadows just before. Again he notices the man in the green cloak, but decides to keep it to himself. Nobody would believe a boy anyways.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 12

The Party leaves early in the morning on a Cherek ship. The king and queen say goodbye to each other. Barak is excited to see his dear friend Greldik is the captain of the ship they will be on. Garion assures himself there is no way that those two are Belgarath or Polgara. At least no way she could be his aunt. He quickly falls asleep after they shove off from shore. Belgarath spoke at length with the king.

The third day proved to be very cold. The ship had ice all over it. Barak tried to reassure Durnik that the Cherek Bore wasn't that bad. Silk protested that he doesn't go through it sober. They wait until the tide changed on the fourth day.

Garion places himself at the front of the ship with Barak as they move through the Bore. First they swirl around the edge a couple of times and then shoot out over the eddies and turbulant waters. The whole experience was exilerating for him. Until Polgara showed up scolding him again. Belgarath is quick to take control and explain to Garion that she is frightened for his safety. That is why she always seems to be overprotective. He apologises to Pol and says he will be more careful in the future.

They dock at Val Alorn and load up in sleighs. Most of the group takes off ahead while Garion waits for Barak to finish his goodbyes. The two soon start off in their ride and Garion is looking about in wonder. Passing the temple of the bear god, An old woman in robes tells Barak that his doom is forthcoming. Barak stops and warns the old hag to watch her toungue or he will silence it for good. As they drive off again the old woman this time speaks to Garion and calls him the greatest of lords. She asks him to remember that it was Martje who first addressed him as such.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 11

The group left in the morning for Sendaria being escorted by soldiers of the king no less. On the second day of travel Garion began expressing his worries to Durnik. He reassures the boy that they haven't done anything wrong so they won't be thrown in the dungeon. Garion still objects that maybe Mister Wolf has done something wrong.

Silk intercedes and begins telling they boy of Sendarias history. Or at least his version of it. He tells Garion how the king is elected and what a foolish thing that was. Silk and the captain have a few disagreements to the story, but Brendig finally leaves in frustration.

They travel in a somber mood and arrive on the ninth day of travel. Uopn reaching the castle of Sendar they are greeted by Count Nilden. The count insists that they are to clean and change before being presented to the king. Brendig insists that they be taken to see the king right away. Both argue about how both are on the authority of his majesty.

They are finally led to where they can bath and change into more presentable court clothing. Everyone seems to not care for the attire chosen for them. Except for Aunt Pol in her new blue dress.

Once they are presented and the king begins to speak it is aparent that Wolf is less than happy. They exchange formallities with everyone present and express their urgency. The king says he has a feast in their honor first. They all feast and make small talk. Some reminecse and others hint at things to come.

They all gather in the kings apartments. The king, Wolf and Pol go into a private room to have a discussion. Silk excuses himself on a matter of business while Queen Layla is entertaining. Garion slowly makes his way to the door and listens without appearing he is listening.

Overhearing quite a few things, Garion is extremely shocked. Is Mister Wolf really Belgarath the sorcerer? Is Aunt Pol really Belgarath's daughter Polgara the Sorceress? And now they are going to cherek instead of pursuing this theif? Just to talk with more kings and queens that think they know what really going on. Finally, Who is this Rivan King they need to return and what happened to the last one?

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 10

The group travels fifteen leagues toward Cammar before they stop for the night at a hostel. Aunt Pol quickly shoos Garion off to bed after dinner. He doesn't go without his usual inquisitive nature surfacing. We find out his parents were named Geran and Ildera and they also were not sendars. Garion again reaches up to touch Pols white streak in her hair. He is quickly brushed aside and told he is not ready for that yet.

The next day they leave in a misty fog. At least it wasn't snowing that day. They quickly travel to Cammar over the next little while. Upon reaching the city, Aunt Pol expresses that there is no need to pose as merchants and she will take care of it this time. When she reaches the gate she poses as the Dutchess of Erat and becomes even more demanding.

They soon find lodging at the Lion inn and the owner's daughter is sent to be the Dutchesses maid. Pol assigns everyone a proper station title before the little girl arrives as her maid. Since little is discussed that night, They all retire while Aunt Pol requests a bath.

The next day the town is covered with snow. Garion spends time conversing with the new girl until Pol summons her for a dress fitting. Mister Wolf and Silk go out on the town to search for "it" again. Garion spends time with Barak and is troubled when he can't seem to get the answers he wants. It is aparent that Barak is afraid of Pol. Barak then decides to show Garion about some sword tactics out in the courtyard.

Later Silk and Mister Wolf came back from searching. After Pol is summoned, All take a moment to admire her new dress. Wolf states that "it" has been here and they begin to discuss plans and wiegh the options at hand. While discussing these things a group of soldiers is noticed coming to the inn.

Everyone in the group hides in the other room. Leaving Garion and Aunt Pol to maintain this rouse. The innkeeper knocks and introduces a Captain of the Sendarian army. The Captain says he is looking for an old man with white hair and was imformed she has such a person in her employmentand the king wishes to speak with him. Captain Brendig also speaks that he is at court all the time and has never seen her there.

Before things can escalate any further Mister Wolf comes out of the next room. He states that he is the one the king is looking for. It is decided they will go peacefully and see what the king has to say. It seems that Mister Wolf is ver irritated at the intrussion. The group will leave in the morning.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 9

After two weeks traveling the group reaches Muros. By this time Garion feels he knows the basics of the secret Drasnian hand language. Aunt Pol again expresses her distaste for the inn, but turns out that it is actually very clean inside. Nyissians are briefly mentioned as snake worshipers being the ones who killed the Rivan King.

Again Mister wolf and Silk went out to search. While they were gone Garion talks with Aunt Pol again and asks more questions. As every other time he had no luck at obtaining any answers from her. When the two return, Mister Wolf again reports that "it" has not been here either. The party quickly decides to move on to Cammar.

While discussing wether to obtain another load or not, Durnik notices Brill in a doorway. They decide to leave as soon as possible. Within minutes all were meeting by the stables. Durnik sold the carts for what he could as to lighten the load. Mister Wolf decided they should ride the horses to a camp and exchange them for new ones.

On their way out of town they are attack by a group of thugs. Some target Garion and Barak and Silk help defend him. After a short scuffel the attackers flee into the night. Brill is seen shouting at them from a window nearby. Garion quickly asserts that Asharak knew where they were going and sent Brill to wait for them. It is agreed that the grolim that passed them could very well have been Asharak.

Suddenly, Mister Wolf notices a figure standing in another window. He says that it is a grolim and Silk responds by throwing a dagger into the window. He guesses that he at least grazed him and the party quickly moves on. Garion found it curious that every time he thinks about Asharak he seems to get tongue tied.

They rode until they came upon the Algar camp. This is where we first hear Mister Wolf referred to as Ancient One. A quick discussion with the guards by Mister Wolf and they were on their way with new horses. Horses much better suited for a fast journey.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 8

This chapter begins with Garion still learning the hand language from Silk. After a short distance Pol says there are people coming down the path. They move off a ways and Garion feels an unexplained sensation as some Murgos and a Grolim pass by.

After five more days of traveling they stop at Winold. Aunt Pol insisted that she not sleep on the ground again. Garion leaves to roam about in his own thoughts. While in the village he notices a figure he identifies as Brill meeting another figure. The two exchange words and some coin and Garion has to avoid being caught.

The boy quickly returns to the inn and tells everyone what he just saw. Silk leaves for about a half hour and returns with news that it seems Brill is hiring people to watch for them, but doesn't know they are there already. The group decides to leave at four in the morning to avoid detection. As they are leaving Garion notices a light in a window and mentions it to Silk.

They travel a few leagues and rest the horse in a copse of trees. Waiting there to see if anyone was following, Garion and Silk conversed. Garion has decided that they were following something thats been stolen. Silk also mentions that he doesn't think Garion is a Sendar. Matter of fact he is not sure what he is. They didn't notice anyone following so they continued on.

Another ways down the raod and they reached the farm to pick up the load of hams. Silk asks the farmer about Brill and learns that he was here a couple weeks ago. They spend the night at the farm and continue towards Muros the next morning with a load of hams to deliver.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 7

In this chapter Garion begins asking Mister Wolf why they are hiding from the Murgos. Aunt Pol quickly sends Garion to scrub the dishes again. After four days of traveling they reach Darine.

Silk tells a story of being a merchant with a load of turnips. Calls himself Ambar of Kotu to the gaurds. They exchange words and the group goes into town. They first stop at the inn and get rooms and stable. Aunt Pol had to inspect so she could see if it suited her.

Silk and Mister Wolf go around town to conduct business and search for the thing. Garion decides to go to the stables and speak with Durnik. They speak about thier confusions only to decide they will trust Aunt Pol's judgement. Mister Wolf ans silk return and disclose that "it" has not been here. It is then diceded to go to Muros after selling the turnips.

The nexy Day Garion goes with Silk to sell the turnips. He learns about the Drasnian hand language watching silk and the merchant. Silk is happy to report to Garion that he got three gold crowns for the load. They meander over to another merchant to find another load.

Upon arriving they also find a Murgo doing business. After telling another tale about losing his fortune as Ambar. The Murgo indtroduces himself as Asharak. They talk about Ambar and his spy days. Garion's mind is trying to warn him in several way, but he can't seem to tell Silk. Instead he remains silent, but recognizes him as the black figure in the distance. They leave with a cargo of hams to pick up out of the ordeal.

The next day they deliver the turnips to a warehouse. Starting of the way they came toward Muros. First West then South was the path before them. Garion found himself in Silk's company. Asking many questions he soon himself is learning this Drasnian hand language under Silk's instruction.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 6

The four adventurers travel a ways north east on the trail. After awhile they turn off into the woods on Mister wolf's direction. Garion runs away from two new people. Very tall and muscular is Barak. Second was Silk, A short man with the face like a weasel. Both are introduced by Mister Wolf.

They leave after a short respite in wagons full of turnips. That being part of the plan to stay under the radar. Garion falls asleep on top of a bunch of turnips for awhile. They pass through a village quickly, but not before the cobblestones wake Garion. He decides to fiegn sleeping so he can listen to the adults talking.

He overhears Mister Wolf and Aunt Polgara discussing where they were going. First to Darine to see if "it" has been through there. Then to Muros or Cammar. Aunt Pol thinks better of persisting in her protests about it. They continue traveling and Garion falls asleep again.

This Chapter was short, but introduced two more main characters. I mean who couldn't use someone sneaky or some muscle? As you will soon find out that both of these newcomers has thier own uniqe way about them. Laughed aloud when Garion ran away from them while everyone was standing around. Anyways, Now they are a full band of adventurers! Not exactly sure what seems to be going on quite yet, but deffinitely very interested.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 5

Mister Wolf returns in the fall with a serious look about him. He talks with Pol while Garion is listening in. It seems that things are not quite as they seem. Something has been stolen by someone and Wolf intends to find it. Garion is overjoyed to hear he will be going with.

Later he sees Aunt Pol going to talk with Faldor. After she enters the building, Garion also notices Brill listening in himself. Faldor and Pol appear at the door saying goodbyes and Garion hurries off. He keeps quiet about Brill since that would bring himself into question.

At Dinner a new story of ghosts and greed is told by Mister Wolf. Brill expresses his discontent for the story. Pol and Wolf realize that Brill is probably a spy. Wolf and the boy go to find Brill, but he was not at home. They went to the stables and found him trying to flee. A skirmish takes place and Durnik shows up to disarm Brill. The group binds Brill and leave on the start of their journey.

Now we wonder what is going to happen to this unlikely quad. Durnik, Garion, Aunt Pol and Mister Wolf. Why do the Murgos need to spy on them? What has been stolen thats so important? Where are they going first? Will Aunt Pol ever tell Garion what is going on?

This is a pivotal chapter in which a lot of important things start to be shown. Garion seems to have a battle-sense manifesting as before with Rundorig. This has me very excited to read the next chapter. I feel an adventure brewing!

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 4

This Chapter starts with some time passing and Garion getting a bit older. Just before his fourteenth birthday there was an accident. Garion and the other children had decided to build a raft. They took it out on the lake in turns. While Garion was out the bindings started to untie. Garion couldn't swim and almost drowned. Durring his splashing he seen the black figure on his horse again. Once on the shore he was gone. Garion had hit his head thrashing about since he couldn't swim and had passed out.

Awaking to Aunt Pol in his bedroom, Garion was quickly scolded about the dangers involved with his mishap. From then on he was always doing chores in the kitchen. Mostly scrubbing the pots clean. Whenever he could he would sneak off to play with his friends anyway. On one such night Zubrette asked about his birthmark on his right palm. Garion couldn't properly answer so later he asked Aunt Pol. She told him his father had the same mark. He touched Pols white streaked hair with that hand and felt something open in his mind. Aunt Pol said she would show him some other time.

Durring Erastride a Murgo and a few Thulls showed up at the Gate wanting to buy hams from Faldor. No business was to be done on Erastride so they joined the feast until the next day. While feasting, the Murgo made a mental note of Pol and asked about Garion by the false name he had given before. The next day they bought the hams and left. A new farmer Brill was brought on that winter. Garion didn't like him or the way he carried himself.

Zubrette was causing more problems flirting with all the boys. Garion gets caught kissing her by Pol and once again is scolded. Garion hardly ever seen Zubrette after that. Aunt Pol Made sure of it.

I felt this was a good setting up chapter. Filled in a lot of mundane details, but helped build more character reputations at the same time. I enjoyed the little play durring the festival. It showed how beliefs are different evewrywhere, but the passion people have for them remain the same. I did start to notice that Aunt Pol seems to be a little overprotective of Garion. With that mark on his hand she has good reason I think.

I was also wondering why the black figure didn't try to save him. Is it a figment of Garion's imagination? Why are the Thulls and Murgos looking for him? Overall this is a very well written chapter. Keeps me wanting to read more.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 3

This chapter begins with the traveler saying his goodbyes to Pol. They performed the usual bickering between them. He offers to replenish her kitchen by way of restocking along his way. Aunt Pol says she needs spices and he could get them for her. After asking to take Garion along a short flurry of words are exchanged. Pol agrees as long as he is kept from disreputable places.

Before long Garion and the traveler are on their way down the road. Before long Garion asks him why he has no name. The traveler responds by saying he has too many names. It just depends where he is. After a short conversation, Garion decides to call him Mister Wolf. As they meander down the beaten path Garion hears the stories of the Arendish civil wars and passes the time.

Upon reaching the village, Wolf takes Garion to a tavern to eat a meal before the journey back. Entering the tavern we quickly learn that Garion can't read. Mister wolf is surprised and says he'll have Aunt Pol teach him. They eat they're two day old meal and leave to find the spice merchant.

Two Thulls are noticed at the spice merchant. Wolf tells Garion to be quiet and that these men are dangerous. Garion is questioned by one of them and quickly lies to cover himself. Mister Wolf quickly conducts the business there and they leave. Instead of staying overnight at the inn, the two leave for Faldor's farm. Obviously in a hurry to get away from the Cthol Murgos.

While traveling home, Garion asks about the coin the Murgos had tried to give him. Mister wolf explains that Murgos money isn't always what it seems. Wolf had taken that coin and given Garion a sendarian coin instead. They then talk about Garion's parents for a bit before he falls asleep.

Reaching the farm, Garion is awake enough to hear Aunt Pol and Mister Wolf talking once he was carried upstairs. Wolf reports what happend durring the journey with the Thulls and the coin. Garion quickly falls to sleep again while the two are talking.

This chapter is where the story really begins in my opinion. A little traveling and character building takes place. Also, introducing the Thulls. Your first bad guys of the book. Starts to make it feel more like an adventure. I began to wonder how this Mister Wolf knew so much about Aunt Pol though. Is there a history between them? It leaves you with a sense that things a starting to happen. You may easily read the next few chapters just wondering about this one.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 2

This chapter begins by commenting that Garion has become a teenager. At least that is how I see it. The mood quickly shifts while focusing the attention on a wandering storyteller. This storyteller doesn't seem to be anybody important. He has always been welcomed at the farm. Aside from his thievery of Aunt Pol's kitchen. He would refuse offered food and then steal from the plate before it was gone. Even Pol didn't seem to mind the game of trying to catch the old wolf.

All the people at the farm loved his stories. They were almost magical. The old wolf could make sound effects like rain and wind among others. Durring this visit Faldor requests the story of old. The storyteller then told the story of the gods, similar to the prolouge, while everyone patiently listened.

Once the story came to an end, Garion found himself outside talking with the traveler. Carrying a lantern for the old wolf, they walk to his sleeping place in the barn. Durring the walk they discuss why there was no ending to the story. Garion says that it is only a story. The traveller simply says "Is it?". Hinting that Garion may someday be called upon by the gods to do a favor.

This chapter was a little short for my tastes, but still left me wanting to know more specifics. Who is this storyteller? Why did Aunt Pol and him give each other those looks? Why did he hint at Garion being so important? Short chapter with plenty of content. Deffinitely helps paint a good picture.

Pawn of Prophecy Chapter 1

This chapter starts off describing the boy Garion. About his days in the kitchen and the games he would play with Aunt Pol. His aunt was a master cook in the kitchen and ran all aspects of it. Aunt Pol always kept close watch on the boy, even when he thought she wasn't. Aunt Pol could be strict at times, but Garion knew that she loved him dearly.

Garion grew up on Faldor's farm as long as he could remember. Faldor was a good master and treated his people with respect. As one could expect, everyone knew everyone else and were all aquainted with one another. In addition to the farmers there was also a smith named Durnik. Durnik would let the boy watch him work as long as he stayed out of the way. Garion learned that even though you might not see the work that was done, you should always do your best so you know it was done right.

There were three other kids about his age. Rundorig, a large Arend boy. Daroon, a small framed Sendarian boy. Lastly there was Zubrette, a Sendarian girl that had the boys wrapped around her finger. She would alweays get the boys in trouble. Daroon fell out of a tree and broke his arm when she gaoded him into going higher. Aunt Pol would make the boys her special teas whenever they would get hurt. After scolding Zubrette, Aunt Pol tells Garion to stay away from her. That begins his work scrubbing dishes and the like.

Garion first notices a black armored figure on a black steed in the distance, but when he looks back the figure is gone. A short time goes by and Garion hears the story of Brand Fighting Kal-Torak. Rundorig and Garion decide to reenact the legendaryt battle and both boys get hurt. Aunt Pol of course scolds them for being so dumb and stitches Garion up. After telling her why they were doing battle, Aunt Pol tells him to never say the name Torak again. Garion agrees and then takes one of Pols potions and drifts off to sleep.

I like how this chapter flowed. Begining with a boy and building on that. Different from the normal where most characters are fully grown from the start. It give you a chance to really learn "who" that person is. Showing he has a normal life in most aspects. However, who is this mysterious person all in black watching him from a distance. Why does he feel like he knows him.

I found myself quickly being immersed into the story and begining a bond with more than one person. Aunt Pol, Garion or even Durnik. Curious to meet Faldor as well to see if he really is so nice. Thats about all I can say about this chapter, but a very good start.

Pawn of Prophecy Prolouge

The prolouge is taken from the book of Alorn. A fictional book from this paticular world that is a history of the gods and their people. It begins with a description of the different gods and how they are related to one another. How Aldur was sought after by a child and taught him the will and the word. Aldur named him Belgarath.

Aldur had no people to call his own and so created the orb. Torak stole the orb and misused it. Torak reshaped the land by splitting it apart and letting the waters flood in separating them. The orb seemed to display a conciousness. The orb became angry and burned out his left eye, melting his face and charring his left hand to ashes. From then on he was known as Kal-Torak or One-eye.

Belgarath was sought after by Cherek Bear-shoulders and his sons. They travelled to the tower of One-eye and stole the orb back. Riva Iron-grip was the one to hold onto the orb and not be burned by it. Upon waking Kal-Torak was so upset by his prize being stolen, he laid waste to his tower and city. Making his people wander in the wilderness to form new settlements.

The Angaraks and their god came for Riva Iron-grip and his companions to take back that thing which was stolen from a thief. Riva Iron-grip held out the orb and Kal-Torak fled while parts of his army were consumed by fire. Then the gods left this world in physical form only so One-eye could not find them.

Riva Iron-grip and his brothers separated and formed new people and lands unique for their own. Since Riva could hold the orb he was given the task of keeping it from and evil hands. Esspecialy One-eye. Belar then sent Riva some meteorite ore to froge a great sword with the orb in it's hilt. Only Iron-grip could wield the sword and its awesome power.

Now Belgarath sent his daughter, Beldaran, To be Riva's wife and provide him with children. The new hier would always show a birthmark of the orb on his right palm. Both sisters are committed to protecting Riva and his line. Some say they still watch over them to this day.

At first this prolouge and the way it is written can be confusing. I promise though that by the end of the book it will make perfect sense. Not much else to say since this was just some history and not new story.
